“All Asians are good at math, Asians are good students, Asian people are smarter, Asians make lots of money.” These are harmful stereotypes about Asian people that are not uncommon; however, one might say they are “good” stereotypes and therefore it is okay to use them but it can be hurtful to them or make them stressed and feel like they have to be good at math like they don’t have a choice. There are so many stereotypes that were just ones about Asians but there are so many about so many different people. Everyone knows what a stereotype is and sometimes they can just be plain hurtful to other people and how they think about themselves.
Stereotypes have been around for as long as anyone can remember and if you don’t know what a stereotype is its people saying “Asians are good at math” or in school stereotypes are the jocks they are good at sports or the nerds are nerdy and play video games. Stereotypes are just easy people judge someone before ever even talking to them or getting to know them but stereotypes are not a very good way to judge who someone is. Some stereotypes are nice and kind ones but about 90% of them are bad and more hurtful to other people than they actually help. Even the definition of a stereotype says it is way over-simplified; it says “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.”.
In school, there are so many stereotypes depending on what you do with your spare time and the people that you hang out with. Stereotypes make people feel bad for who they are and can make them be something that they don’t want to be and try to make them someone else. There are also good stereotypes that can make people feel better about themselves. Another huge stereotype nowadays is teenagers. People just shouldn’t be judged before you get to know them or just know more about them. Everyone lives are very diverse and different from each other. It's hard being a teenager these days when so many things people can stereotype you to these days. But also these days there is a lot of diversity and more acceptance than the years before.
People can use positive stereotypes too and they can help people feel better about themselves and what they do and who they are as a person. They can help people be more confident and happy. Stereotypes will always be in the world. There is no way to actually ever get rid of them. Just know that when you make assumptions like that they aren't right most of the time and you can hurt people's feelings. Stereotypes will always be there and they will always happen it's just human nature but sometimes they can hurt or maybe even help it all depends on how you use them.
