FAST FOOD VEGAN OPTIONS

A good New Year’s resolution for fast food restaurants would be to have more plant based options available. Veganism and vegetarianism has become more and more popular and accepted these past few years. With that comes new restaurants and new menu items in order to be more inclusive to people who are vegan or vegetarian. PETA, people for the ethical treatment of animals, says, “Taco Bell has many great options for vegans! The fast-food chain has a variety of sides that are vegan—including the cinnamon twists, chips and guacamole (or pico de gallo), cilantro rice, black or refried beans, and Mexican rice—and all of its salsas are vegan. You can also order the Bean Burrito ‘fresco style,’ the regular Black Bean Burrito without cheese, or the Veggie Cantina Power Bowl (ask for no sauce). Several of Taco Bell’s other dishes can be veganized simply by omitting a few ingredients or asking for it ‘fresco style.’ The tacos, nachos, Crunchwrap Supreme, and Mexican Pizza are vegan when you hold the meat (substitute beans if you’d like), cheese, and sour cream.” There are a lot of popular fast food restaurants that could learn a thing or two from Taco Bell for example McDonalds has less than five vegan options. There are countless restaurants that have a decent amount of options but it is 2021 and it is very common for people to be vegan or vegetarian. Fast food restaurants need to be more inclusive and offer multiple vegan options!

MET Gala review
BY EVE CANDELL FASHION/FOODIES EDITOR In 2020, the Met Gala, otherwise known as the Costume Institute Gala, hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was tragically cancelled. The gala is a massive fundraiser for the New York Costume Institute, and it is still vague as to whether or not the 2021 gala will take place. This week we will be delving into some of the show stopping ensembles from past galas. Actress Blake Lively (The Age of Adeline, A Simple Favor) has always been one to go all-out for the Met Gala, wearing stunning and showstopping gowns of feathers and silk. The 2018 theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". Her gown was a stunning red velvet and silk train, that required an entire entourage to accompany her to the gala. Actress and musician Zendaya dazzled crowds in a huge Dolce & Gabbana gown, covered in tropical birds, plants and flowers. It is a little known fact that the night before the Met Gala, Zendaya was rushed to the emergency room due to a severe allergic reaction. She suffered a full body rash, hives, and a sleepless night, Zendaya's Met Gala look was definitely one of the most impressive and grand dresses of the evening. At the 2014 gala, musician Taylor Swift showed up in a beautiful blush pink gown, following the them "Charles James: Beyond Fashion". Her look was simplistic yet elegant, designed by acclaimed designer Oscar de la Renta. Taylor is hardly a stranger to Met Gala couture, and has attended several years in the past. Rihanna hosted the 2018 Met Gala in a beautiful metallic dress and headpiece that bore an uncanny resemblance to the classic attire of the Catholic Pope. The theme of that year's gala was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". Rihanna took this theme quite literally, and her look caused quite a ruckus after the event, but will definitely go down as one of the boldest and most creative outfits to ever grace the red carpet. It is truly unfortunate that the 2021 Met Gala could be cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus, however it is clear that over past years we have been given plenty of acclaimed looks. See the slideshow to the left for more beautiful and unique Met Gala looks from past years, and let us know which is your favorite! POSTED 1/13/21 |

The making of macarons
more french pastries...Croissants: bread baked with butter to give a crisp outside and soft inside.
Eclairs: dough with a butter cream filling on the inside with chocolate drizzled onto the top of it.
|
BY TYLER LYBBERT
HEALTH/WELLNESS EDITOR The famous french cookie, the macaron, has been around since the seventh century according to The Daily Meal. Macarons consist of an almond based and meringue shell filled with ganache or a kind of buttercream frosting. Some people may confuse these little guys with Macaroons, but macaroons consist of coconut balls usually dipped in chocolate. While most people know these cookies as a French dessert, Culture Trip says, “Catherine de’ Medici likely brought the maccherone to France in the 16th century from Italy, where it had been produced in Venetian monasteries since the 8th century”. Anyone who has baked these cookies knows how precise they must be. If anything is less than perfection these cookies can turn out flat and have a mushy texture rather than the soft, chewy texture these cookies are popular for. Instead of using regular baking methods that most recipes in the United States use (eg: cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons) the French recipe uses grams and ounces to determine the quantity of ingredients used. First when baking these cookies, you sift together the almond flour and confectioners sugar. Separately you mic the egg whites with vanilla extract, sugar, and cream of tartar until it forms a very stiff peak. Once they reach a stiff peak you start to add in the dry ingredients until the consistency of the batter is lava like. You pipe the macaron batter onto baking sheets, and let them sit for an hour. This allows the foot of the macaron to form. Pop them into the oven and BAM- you have your macaron shell. The frosting is a whole nother story of whipping cream, chocolate, and butter together. These cookies are super expensive when buying them from the store. Martha Stewart says, “A single macaron costs about $0.18 to make at home, whereas a bakery version can set you back up to $4 per cookie”. Make them at home and enjoy this amazing cookies. More for less! Published: 1/4/21 |
HANdel's homemade ice cream & yogurt
One thing that the Draper-Sandy area has always lacked is a classic ice cream parlor. Last year, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt opened a new location at 26 W 11400 S in Sandy. Handels has one of the most extensive flavor selections of any ice cream parlor in the area. You can purchase ice cream by the scoop, as ice cream pops, in sundaes, a hurricane, or as a milkshake!
The Sandy location’s menu includes countless options. The flavor options vary at each location and depend on the season. This season, the flavor options are banana cream pie, birthday cake, black raspberry chunk, blueberry cobbler, “Blue Monster”, brownie dough, “Buckeye”, butter pecan, “Spouse Like a House”, chocoholic chunk, chocolate, chocolate cake batter, chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate marshmallow, chocolate peanut butter brownie, chocolate raspberry truffle, cinnamon graham cracker, coconut cream pie, snicker doodle, cotton candy, coffee chocolate chip, chocolate malt with caramel, grape, “Graham Central Station”, pumpkin ripple, mint chocolate chip, monkey business, mud pie, pumpkin pie, “Oree-Dough”, pistachio, salty caramel truffle, praline pecan, strawberry, strawberry cheesecake chunk, “Tin Lizzy”, vanilla, vanilla caramel brownie, vanilla with oreo, vanilla with Reese’s, s’mores, black cherry, pumpkin cheesecake, and chocolate almond.
On top of their regular dairy flavors, they have several dairy free options, “Blue Moon Ice”, “Watermelon Ice”, strawberry margarita sherbet, pineapple sherbet, and wild berry sorbet. Needless to say, Handel's has options for everyone, but it does not have the most extensive dairy-free/vegan options. A single scoop, which is actually about 3 scoops, cost $3.95, and a double dish is $4.95. You can also buy ice cream by the pint or quart.
Personally, this reporter has sampled the “Oree-dough” which is a creamier take on the classic cookies n’ cream, and extremely decadent. Another good option is the chocolate raspberry truffle, which is rich chocolate ice cream swirled with thick fresh raspberry puree. It’s decadent but the raspberry makes it feel light! On top of that, this past season there was an apple pie flavor, which was a mix of cinnamon vanilla ice cream and spicy sweet apple pie filling, with chunks of pie crust throughout. This flavor was definitely my favorite out of the ones I have tried, and I hope you keep these recommendations in mind when you head to Handel’s!

Draper James:
Reese witherspoon's women's clothing brand

Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon started her own women’s clothing brand in 2015. The brand is called Draper James and the clothing is styled after Witherspoon’s Southern Upbringing. Witherspoon named the brand after her late grandmother, Dorothea Draper, and grandfather, William James Witherspoon. The famed actress stated, “My grandparents taught me everything I know about gracious Southern living. From them I learned to dress and act like a lady, to take pride in my home, to reach out to help a neighbor, and to always invite everyone in for a visit.”
Witherspoon’s brand sells a number of clothing options from dresses to shirts to even pajamas and jackets. The brand also sells a multitude of accessories including: hand bags, jewelry, and now reusable masks. The clothing ranges in affordability depending on the item. For example, shirts go from $25 up to $125 depending on the style and material of the shirt.
The dresses have an even larger range of pricings, going from as little as $50 all the way to $225. With this large range in pricing, there is bound to be something anyone can afford. Draper James’ has been applauded for using minority and plus-sized models in their advertising. Not only is this inclusive, but it also helps shoppers from all sizes and backgrounds to see how the particular item would look on someone with a similar look.
Witherspoon’s brand has been shown to be very popular among women due to the wide variety of clothing. While everything on her site has proven to sell well, the most successful items are Witherspoon’s signature dresses. These dresses come in a multitude of styles, making them usable in all situations. When reviewing her chambray faux wrap dress, a dress Witherspoon herself wears, one shopper stated, “Love it! The length, the color, the fabric, everything!” Another ecstatic shopper stated “This dress fits perfect! I’m slightly curvy and this dress accesses the parts I want it to. Great length. Very comfortable.” With the number of clothing options, wide variety of prices, and extensive inclusiveness, Draper James has proven itself to be a brand accessible and affordable to anyone.

The cheesecake Factory:
What exactly makes it so popular?
BY EVE CANDELL
FASHION & FOODIES EDITOR There are very few restaurant chains that can claim to have a menu as vast as that of the Cheesecake Factory. From Italian to Chinese to classic American dishes, the Cheesecake Factory has it all. From the moment you step inside the restaurant to the moment you are seated, you are presented with a wide pastry case of desserts, ranging from rich cheesecake to indulgent ice cream treats and everything in between. When you are finally seated, you are presented with the famous menus and a basket of warm infamous brown and French breads. The atmosphere is welcoming and the smells that greet you are definitely part of the allure. |
STUDENTs & CheesecakeSome of our editors and classmates shared their favorite dishes from The Cheesecake Factory, look and see which dishes make an appearance.
"Out of all the dishes at The Cheesecake Factory, my favorite would have to me the Mac and Cheeseburger. When you bite into the burger, the flavor of the mac and cheese explodes in your mouth. It's super filling and tastes so good!" - Spencer Croston "I love the Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake, it is my favorite! It's so creamy." - Sydney Rudel |

Part of what makes the Cheesecake Factory so popular is its endless options for various dietary restrictions. From vegetarian to vegan to gluten free, there are many options available to customers to choose from. Some of our favorites of these dishes include the veggie burger, which according to food enthusiast Lauren Carn is one of her favorite vegetarian options around. “As a vegetarian of seven years I’ve had quite a few veggie burgers but the Cheesecake Factory veggie burger will always be my favorite. It tastes like heaven.”

Some of our other favorite vegetarian meals include Evelyn’s Favorite Pasta and the Kale and Quinoa salad. Our favorite vegetarian appetizer is the Avocado Egg Rolls, crispy wrapper with layers of avocado, sun dried tomato, and cilantro served with a tamarind-cashew sauce. If you would like to sample several egg rolls at once, opt for the Egg Roll Sampler, which will give you several different options to try!
Some of our overall favorite entrees and appetizers include the Fettuccine Alfredo, Hot Spinach and Cheese Dip, Orange Chicken, Old Fashioned Burger, Southern Fried Chicken Sliders, Jamaican Black Pepper Shrimp, and the Crusted Chicken Romano. All of these dishes are indulgent and worth the price, and will leave you feeling extremely satisfied.

Onto the third course, dessert. Of course The Cheesecake Factory is famous for its wide selection of cheesecakes, but their other desserts are just as delicious. The classic Fresh Strawberry cheesecake is extremely popular, and a staple for many cheesecake lovers. Creamy classic cheesecake topped with glazed fresh strawberries, what more could you ask for?
Well, if you are in the mood for something a little richer, a favorite is the Oreo Dream Extreme cheesecake, which is layer upon layer of creamy cheesecake with oreo cookies baked in, with layers of oreo mousse, chocolate fudge and topped with milk chocolate icing and whipped cream. (See below for some of our other favorites, ranging from fruity to decadent!) For a lighter option, go with the Hot Fudge Sundae, classic vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge and almonds. We hope that this breakdown of some of our favorite dishes will aid you on your next Cheesecake Factory journey, and we would love to hear back from you on which dishes you enjoyed! |

I have done some research and determined the best outfits to wear while frolicking and what fields are best suited for it. Before we dive in, frolicking can be defined as moving about cheerfully, excitedly, or energetically.

Femme fashion
should fashion be gender exclusive?
Harry Styles is one of the most obvious examples of this, sporting his signature painted nails at various events. His specific blue and pink style that he wore on the cover of his newest album Fine Line started quite the social media trend. Feminine and masculine fans alike flooded to TikTok to find the exact shades of lacquer he used, and shared tips and tricks to replicate his exact look. His professional manicurist, Jenny Longworth shared that Styles favors spicing up his nail looks for editorial pieces, including his classic smiley face yellow nails. Men around the world have followed suit, expressing themselves freely by styling themselves with similar nail looks, and it is very common to see men wearing nail polish nowadays.

Styles of course isn’t the only man in Hollywood pushing to eliminate gender exclusive fashion trends. Little Women stars Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan stunned audiences when the Little Women cover shoot by Entertainment Weekly (which you can read here) was published, with Chalamet styled in a softer and more feminine style, and Ronan dressed in a harsher, more masculine style. It is becoming more and more normalized for men to appear in public with makeup on as well, and Chalamet in this photoshoot exemplifies the wonders of men’s makeup beautifully.
In past years, men dressing in more feminine styles was grossly stereotyped as being a “gay” style, but now, as it becomes more and more normalized, it is becoming more socially acceptable for all genders to style themselves however they would like, freely expressing their passion through their clothing and accessories regardless of sexual orientation.

Next time you are out in public (don’t forget a mask!) keep an eye out for women and men sharing fashion trends and expressing themselves how they see fit, and be proud of them for sharing their style with the world regardless of sexual orientation, gender, age or any other defining factor.

HOly jeans!

BY EMMA CARVER
EDITORIALS EDITOR
Everyone has that one Grandpa that takes one look at the outfit you have hanging on your body and raises his eyebrows. The eyebrow raise is then followed by the iconic line, “Were the rips there when you bought them?” or a more colorful variation, “Why would you buy jeans with the holes already in them, sweetie?” That last one is usually from your sweet grandma that gives you chocolate chip cookies to make up for judging your fashion sense. Anyway the judging looks come, the old folks don’t understand the new trend of holes in your jeans.
The trend of holes in jeans started in the 1980s and became more popular in the 1990s and 2000s. The so-called ‘grunge’ era was what introduced the trend and then it was practiced by the fans of the hard rock bands. These hard rock bands were looked down upon which led to teenagers in their rebellious phases to follow the fashion sense of the members in these bands. Rips in jeans became a symbol of a teen finding their own voice and refusing to follow the fashion trends of their parents. This ‘holy’ jean movement (badum-ch) paralleled the flapper phenomenon in the ‘60s on a smaller scale. It was a way for young people to throw a rebellion of sorts.
In the late 2000s the trend lost its meaning and became a cute fashion statement rather than a way to go against the status quo and oppose the close minded ideals of the ones who came before. Now, in malls across the country every piece of denim you see has a rip in the knees or in the the thighs… or occasionally on the back pockets. The rips in the jeans have gotten out of hand in certain cases where it doesn't even seem like there’s any jean left, there are so many holes. Schools across the nation have had to start making rules in the dress code against holes in teenager’s jeans which has occasionally caused an outrage. Either way, the rips in jeans have become a large trend for kids of all ages, adults occasionally, and some fashion runways have adopted this popular wardrobe statement.

SAUCE BOSS SOUTHERN KITCHEN
BY MASON HUGHES
NATION & WORLD NEWS EDITOR I was born in Atlanta, Georgia. While I lived there, I enjoyed delicious southern food at nearly any restaurant. However, once I moved to Utah, I found that there was not a single restaurant that could provide the same quality of meals as those back in Atlanta. Then, I discovered Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen. Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen, located on 877 E 12300 S, is by far, Draper’s tastiest restaurant. The owner, Chef Julius Thompson, serves large portions of well-seasoned southern food, from shrimp and grits to fried chicken. His food is authentic, taking me back to my days at southern smokehouses and fisheries. I recently attended the restaurant with my friend, Spencer Croston, to review the food. I ordered the “golden splendor,” a meal of delicious cheese shells with tender shrimp and crispy thick cut bacon with a side of fries. Each meal at Sauce Boss also comes with a large piece of sweet cornbread, buttered to perfection. The golden splendor was amazing, with salt and fat combining to create an awesome savory experience. It was also incredibly filling, and as someone who hates to leave restaurants hungry, I’m glad of it. The fries are cooked with a unique batter with the perfect balance of salt and crunch. My friend, Spencer, ordered the fried chicken. He commented that it was juicy and flavorful. As someone who has previously enjoyed the chicken, I agree wholeheartedly. Some of the most overlooked menu items at Sauce Boss are the drinks. Sauce Boss serves the best lemonade in Draper - it is fresh, home-made, and infuses a seasonal mix-in. Sauce Boss also sells Bissap, a cool, refreshing drink made from Roselle, a hibiscus species. I highly recommend it. If I could buy bottles of the stuff, I would. Unfortunately, Sauce Boss currently does not have a dine-in option. Hours are limited due to the pandemic. However, you can easily order your food in person, wait a few minutes, and then enjoy it at nearby Draper Park for a quick picnic. I highly recommend this phenomenal restaurant. It has food that will leave your mouth watering and wanting more. Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen truly provides a delicious taste of the south. POSTED 9/28/20 |

POPEYE's vs. Chick-fil-a: EPIC BATTLE
BY ELI WEAVER
SCHOOL NEWS EDITOR On August 12th, 2020 Popeyes took the world by storm. Chick-Fil-A had to step aside because there was a new girl in town, and she was gonna give Chick-Fil-A a run for her money. When Popeyes came out with their own chicken sandwich jaws dropped. It was blowing up all over twitter with fans comparing and rating the sandwiches. Some of my favorites were: Mandy (Mandykitty15). “Popeyes Spicy chicken sandwich > kale salads” 9:08 PM · Sep 8, 2020 Liyah (therealtyliyah). “I knew 2020 was gonna be chaotic when we went crazy over a chicken sandwich... from Popeyes..” 8:30 PM · Sep 8, 2020 You might be wondering yourself which is better. Well I’m here to put both sandwiches to the test. There will be four categories: Taste, accessibility, appearance, and price. Taste: The Popeyes sandwich gets 207 points in taste. It is super tender and juicy. The chicken is crispy and thick. The bun is round and fluffy. The pickles are super thick. It also gets bonus points for actually coming with sauce. The Chick-Fil-A sandwich gets 187 points. The bun is not as fluffy but makes up for it in taste. Same with the pickles, they aren’t as thick but they have a better taste. The chicken is classic but doesn’t have that southern, authentic taste. Overall, Popeyes has better chicken but Chick-Fil-A has better pickles and buns. Round one goes to Popeyes. Accessibility: Popeyes has a total of 14 restaurants in Utah. The closest one to CCHS is still about 15 minutes away. Popeyes gets 14 points. Chick-FIl-A has 31 restaurants in Utah, one, of which, is in Draper. Chick-Fil-A gets 31 points. Round two goes to Chick-Fil-A Appearance: The Popeyes sandwich looks like it came fresh out of the oven. The bun is perfectly round and voluptuous, the chicken looks as crispy as ever. Popeyes gets 58 points. The Chick-Fil-A sandwich pales in comparison to the Popeyes sandwich, it looks like it just got smashed by a hammer. Sure it tastes great but it looks so unappealing. Chick-Fil-A gets 23 points. Round three goes to Popeyes. Price: The Popeyes sandwich is $3.99, not bad plus you get a huge slab of chicken. Popeyes gets 37 points. The Chick-Fil-A sandwich is $3.05, but you don’t get as much meat. Chick-Fil-A gets 68 points. Round four goes to Chick-FIl-A. The winner is…(insert drum roll noise) Popeyes!
