On September 1, 2021, Texas put the “Heartbeat Bill,” in place which bans abortion after 6 weeks, even including conditions of rape and incest. On Friday, the 3rd of September, Graig Abbott was asked why the bill doesn’t provide an exemption in the cases of rape and incest and his response was, "Let's make something very clear: Rape is a crime, and Texas will work tirelessly to make sure that we eliminate all rapists from the streets of Texas by aggressively going out and arresting them and prosecuting them and getting them off the streets." Over the past week, many people have raised concerns about the details of how the plan will work.
The Heartbeat Bill makes it so that any menstruating person can not have access to an abortion, while the lawmakers also want to incriminate the doctor who performed the abortion and other people involved (such as Uber and Lyft). This anti-abortion law has gotten a rise out of both the main political parties. Right-wing conservatives and pro-life supporters (aka Pro-Lifers) now have a win underneath their belt with this bill enacted. Rebecca Parma, a senior legislative associate at Texas Right to Life said “This is a massive victory for the pro-life movement and we are excited that the law can stay in effect,” when the law went into place almost two weeks ago. She continued to say, "We are optimistic about this law surviving those attacks and that this historic policy will stay in effect and continue to save lives."
Left-wing liberals on the other hand are a lot more upset with this bill. Since September 1, there has been a huge outrage amongst the (mainly Democratic) pro-choice supporters. Many Pro-Choice supporters fear that Roe v Wade, the court case that legalized abortion, will be overturned altogether. Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brought up a point to give the bill another thought. She stated “six weeks late means two weeks late for your period [...] and two weeks late on your period … can really happen if you’re stressed, if your diet changes, or for really no reason at all. So you don’t have six weeks.”
Almost 2 weeks after the ‘Heartbeat Bill’ was put in place, the Department of Justice has sued Texas claiming that the state enacted the law "in open defiance of the Constitution." Since January of this year, 19 states have enacted 97 abortion bans. Due to the abundance of anti-abortion laws, there are still so many people fearful for the future of Roe v Wade.
“Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies. They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women. From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.”
