Optical Illusions

The earliest record of an optical illusion can be found on Greek temple rooftops. The roofs were slanted, but they actually appeared curved.There are three different types of optical illusions: cognitive, literal, and physiological. A cognitive illusion is one that is based on someone's perception of the world. A literal illusion is typically created by combining many smaller images to create a larger image. A physiological illusion is when the brain is trying to figure out a pattern. A very famous optical illusion is known as “The Dress”. It became viral when it was posted online and the creator asked what color people saw. The debate settled with two color combinations, blue and black or white and gold. When asked, the newspaper class at Corner Canyon had varying answers about the optical illusion. Cal Taggart exclaimed, “There’s no way that you see white and gold”. Naiah Sirrine said, “You cannot look at that picture and tell me that it is blue and black”. Ruby Winget calmly added, “I can see both, it just depends on the angle and the picture”. Optical illusions have become so popular that there are multiple museums all over the United States that now are dedicated to optical illusions. I had the opportunity to see one in Orlando, Florida last summer and it was a very interesting experience. There was one room where if you stood in one corner and another person stood in the other corner directly across the room from you, one person would look taller and closer and the other would look smaller and shorter. There was an entire museum that had all three different types of illusions and took about 45 minutes in total to walk through. Many people will continue to be baffled by all the different optical illusions, but will probably not take the time to figure out why they work.
