Utes Football Season 2019
By Drake Larsen
CCHS Sports Editor The University of Utah has had an amazing season this year. They have surpassed many records for passing, rushing and they ended at being number 5 in the nation, and have been doing amazing this year. Many of the players on the team are seniors and this will be their last season at the U of U and it was very special for them. Some of the amazing players on the team were Zach Moss, Tyler Huntley, Bradlee Anae and so many more players that helped us have an amazing record of eleven wins and one loss at the end of the regular season. We had played many teams across the nation such as UCLA, Colorado, California and a huge rival of ours, the Washington Huskies. Utah made it to the Pac 12 championship against Oregon University but ended up losing for the title of Pac 12 Champs. |
Even though the team lost they tried their hardest and gave it their all. A coach from the U of U, Kyle Whittingham has been the defensive coordinator for 10 seasons now and has done an amazing job this year of getting the Utes so far up in the rankings. Hopefully the amazing seniors that have done such an awesome job this season will get drafted into the NFL where the will further their career in football. Some of the records that were made this seasons were made by running back Zach Moss. He has ran more than any other running back in Utah history. This is an amazing team and we hope they keep doing great things in the future.

By Taylor Peterson
Nation&World Sports Editor Winter olympics are coming up in January. Here are some of the sports that are competing. 1. Alpine skiing. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing, which use skis with free-heel bindings. 2. Biathlon. The biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. It is treated as a race where the contestant with the shortest total time wins. Depending on the competition, missed shots result in extra distance or time being added to the contestant's total. 3. Bobsleigh. Bobsleigh or bobsled is a winter sport in which teams of two or four friends make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sleigh. The timed runs are combined to calculate the final score. 4. Cross Country Skiing. Cross-country skiing is a form of skiing where skiers rely on their own locomotion to move across snow-covered terrain, rather than using ski lifts or other forms of assistance. Cross-country skiing is widely practiced as a sport and recreational activity; however, some still use it as a means of transportation. 5. Curling. Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules and shuffleboard. 6. Figure Skating. Figure skating is a sport in which individuals, duos, or groups perform on figure skates on ice. It was the first winter sport to be included in the Olympic Games, when it was contested at the 1908 Olympics in London. The four Olympic disciplines are men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dance. 7. Freestyle Skiing. Freestyle skiing is a skiing discipline comprising aerials, moguls, cross, half-pipe and slopestyle as part of the Winter Olympics. It can consist of a skier performing aerial flips and spins, and can include skiers sliding rails and boxes on their skis. |
8. Ice Hockey. Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points.
9. Luge. A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine and feet-first. A luger steers by using their calf muscles to flex the sled's runners or by exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Racing sleds weigh 21–25 kg for singles and 25–30 kg for doubles. The Tradition Of Thanksgiving football
By Malia Ika
Student Life Editor Thanksgiving Day football games are a tradition from long ago. Families sit down and watch the football games during their Thanksgiving Festivities. This year there were three football games the Bears beat the Lions, the Bills beat the Cowboys and the Saints beat the falcons. By the end of the first quarter the Lions were up 14-7. The second quarter each team only scored 3 points by each kicking a field goal. The third quarter left the two teams tied. In the fourth, the Bears out scored the Lions 7-3 making the final score 24-20 for the Bears win. The First quarter of the Bills Cowboys game started out 7-0 with the cowboys leading. By the second quarter the Bills were up 13-7. Bills stopped Dallas and left them scoreless in the third with a 23-7 lead. Dallas tried to come back in the fourth but it wasn’t enough only scoring 8 points. |
While the Bills only scored 3 points in the final quarter they beat the cowboys 26 to 15. The final game on turkey day was no surprise when the 10 and 2 Saints beat the 3 and 9 Falcons. While the first quarter started out slow with the Saints only scoring one touchdown the Falcons didn’t score at all. In the second quarter things picked up with the Saints scoring 10 points and the Falcons 9 points. Third quarter slowed down again with the Saints only kicking a field goal and Falcons being scoreless. The Atlanta Falcons out scored the New Orleans in the fourth 9-6 but it wasn’t enough to secure the lead. Overall, this Thanksgiving had no upset games but they were still entertaining and fun to watch. Thanksgiving Day NFL football games are a fun and entertaining for the whole family.

SPORts to enjoy during winter
By Taylor Peterson
Nation&World Sports As we’re going into winter weather and winding down on the more popular sports the smaller cold weathered sports are coming to play. These sports you can either play during winter and watch on TV or in person. The first sport is Ice Skating. Usually played December through February. This elegant sport can be played for competing or if you just want to go out with friends to skate for an hour or two. This sport is taken place indoors most times. The best ice skating rink in my opinion is the one in Central Park New York. This huge rink holds up to 8,00 people at a time. Skiing is the next sport. This one is huge in places like Utah, New York, Idaho, Colorado, Vermont, Ohio and etc. This sport takes a lot of skills and gets scary at times. Taking lessons at a young age helps with the nerves as it’s something you learned at a young brain-growing age. |
There are really good resorts everywhere around America. Wherever you go around the world, there would most likely be a ski resort. This sport usually starts around September and ends in February.
Sledding. Sledding is a huge part of many childhoods. This is a huge sport about who can go the fastest and in young kids lifes it’s a way to have fun during winter weather. How you sled is you get this body sized round sleigh and you find a hill with a lot of snow and slid down. Last Sport is Hockey. Now this sport is most popular in Canada. It’s a sport where you have a puck and sticks and try to get it into the goal without losing it. It’s rink is the size of a normal ice skating rink. It’s a game played on ice skates so you have to be really skilled to slide around on skates and use a stick to pass a puck at the same time. Hope you try one of these sports out over the winter days! MBL World Series: Bets And Boobs?!
By Casey Henderson
Movies&TV Editor Batter up! Who’s ready for some baseball? Because the MLB World Series is in full swing! Get ready for some pitching, running, scoring, outing, and maybe a few broken cameras along the way! But if that doesn’t interest you, these stories might! Allow me to show you some of the craziest, and funniest, highlights of the World Series. You ever gambled on something? If you did, we hope it wasn’t an extensive amount of money. Because if it was, we pray for your wallet. In Houston, Texas, a man named Jim McIngvale has bet $3.5 million that the Astros would win the series on Tuesday. nypost.com has this to say on the matter. “The massive bets are a hedge against the millions of dollars McIngvale would lose if the Astros win the World Series.” Talk about being passionate for your sports team. And that’s not all. If the Astros won the first couple of games, Jim would double his bet. Since they’ve won three games, if they win their final game tonight, then the bet would go up to $7.7 million! That’s the craziest bet ever made in baseball history! |
If we’re talking about the Astros, the Washington Nationals plan on winning a game against the Houston team. cbssports.com writes, “Now, Justin Verlander takes the mound for Houston, while the Nationals will turn to Stephen Strasburg, who has a 1.34 career postseason ERA.” What will become of this epic standoff between Washington and Texas? The suspense it killing all of us!! On to a more ridiculous subject, have you ever been flashed before? If you haven’t, we’re all happy for you. Because there has been a whole freak-out over a couple of women who flashed the camera on Sunday night in Washington. People all over the world cried out in shock and terror due to the actions of the two women, identified as Julia Rose and Lauren Summer. CNN reports that they, “are banned indefinitely from ‘all stadiums and facilities,’ according to a letter delivered to them by hand and signed by David Thomas, MLB vice president of security and ballpark operations.” They must’ve been drunk off their rocker to do something like that, or are just looking to cause some mischief. Who knows? Talk about an eventful World Series. POSTED 11/6/19 |
What to expect from the 2020 summer olympics
By Claire Babcock
Health and Wellness Editor 56 years after having organized the Olympic Games, Tokyo, the Japanese capital, is hosting the Summer Olympics again. It will go from July 24 - August 9 in 2020. The Games during 1964 drastically transformed the entire country. According to organizers for the Summer Gamet in 2020, you can expect it to be, “the most innovative ever organized, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best, accepting one another, and passing the legacy for the future.” The organizers are striving to use as many existing competition venues as possible, especially the ones that were built and used for the Olympic Games in 1964. |
Some of the possible locations include Nippon Budokkan for judo, the Baji Koen Park for equestrian events, and Yoyogi National Gymnasium for handball.
The Tokyo National Stadium, which held the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as many athletic competitions in 1964, will be being revamped completely revamped and replaced by a new arena for the 2020 Summer Olympics. There are 6 new or returning sports to pay attention to. Missing in London and Rio, men's baseball and women's softball are back. Five nations will join the hosts in contesting for gold on the diamond. Karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding are also new to the Olympic Games this Summer. POSTED 10/21/19 |
Should College Athletes Be paid?
By Taylor Peterson
Nation&World Sports Editor Should College Athletes Get Paid? NCAA which stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association brings in roughly $1 billion per year in revenue. It is a non-profit organization that regulates student athletes. 96% of the money goes back to schools meaning that college athletes don’t get any of the money and aren’t allowed to sell merchandise or make money off their youtube channels. |
There is a law being passed in California called Fair Pay to Play Act being enforced in 2023. This law will go against NCAA policies and let college athletes to sign endorsement deals and earn money from their names or images. This law is being enforced in 2023 so that all legal issues have time to play out.
Bernie Sanders said on Twitter replying to LeBron James saying, “College athletes are workers. Pay them.” The tweet that Bernie replied to said, “Everyone is California - call your politicians and tell them to support SB 206! This law is a GAME CHANGER. College athletes can responsibly get paid for what they do and the billions they create.” This is showing that college athletes and political people approve of the act and think it is very well deserved.
