Holiday Flight advice

Written by: Jake Bunker, editor of tech

Many people have taken to making the holidays into vacations, whether for traditions or just for a nice break. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the most popular holidays to travel for and not only can it be stressful trying to book trips, but the number of others also scheduling their vacations and traveling at the same time can also become a bit more of a hassle than people like to have to deal with. Holidays and vacations are not the time when people should be focused on stress, so there are many different ways to help make your experience better.
When going on vacation for the holidays, choosing to fly somewhere is the most common choice. One of the most stressful parts of flying, especially for holidays, is trying to get through security. Lots of people like to take their holidays with them when they fly, whether it’s transporting food for Thanksgiving, or taking Christmas presents with them to open while away. These things can be especially problematic if you want to get through TSA easily. If you are trying to take Christmas presents, then it's a good idea to either keep them unwrapped to avoid suspicion, or just ship the gifts to wherever it is that you are going. For food, it is best to avoid taking them in carry-ons and just check them in your luggage instead. Although the TSA is always a pain, there is another part that makes flying over the holidays such a mess, which is booking and planning flights. One way you could make this easier is by choosing to use saved up points in order to save money on the cost of your trip. You could also choose a direct flight to your destination to try and decrease the number of delays or layovers that you can get stuck in. Choosing an airline that could make you more comfortable or secure is also things to consider while flying.

Imagine soft sand, beautiful, clear beaches, gorgeous island scapes, and a vibrant culture, all of this can be found in Hawaii. Hawaii is a very diverse state with multiple volcanoes, rainforests, and islands. There are lots of things to do on Hawaii’s beaches, such as surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, or just enjoying a relaxing day at the beach. Here’s a 7-day plan for first-time visitors to Hawaii.
Day 1 – Arrive in Oahu
Fly into Honolulu and check into your hotel in Waikiki. Afterwards, you can relax on the beach, have a nice dinner, and get ready for tomorrow.
Day 2 – Explore Oahu
Start the day by hiking Diamond Head Crater for an excellent view. Then, head to Hanauma Bay for some snorkeling. You can visit Halona Blowhole and Makapu’u Point, and end the day with a traditional Hawaiian luau.
Day 3 – North Shore
Take a trip to Oahu’s North Shore, where you can stop at the Dole Plantation and Waimea Bay, and grab some lunch from shrimp trucks. Afterwards, return to Waikiki to relax or do some shopping.
Day 4 – Fly to Maui
Take a short flight to Maui and pick up a rental car. Check into your hotel and spend the afternoon at the beach, enjoying a laid-back dinner.

beyond london

by Chloe Francis, editor of entertainment 2

London is quite possibly one of the most famous travel destinations. But while London has much to offer (Westminster Abbey is my personal favorite place to visit), the rest of the UK often goes overlooked with a few major exceptions. If you’re interested in seeing more of what the UK has in store, consider renting a car and leaving London.

The City of Bath

Bath is a small city about three hours from London. Its namesake: the Roman baths it is built around. There’s a museum in the city that talks all about how the baths operated, rituals commonly used in the baths, and even religious worship connected to the baths.
Bath was also one of the places Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, lived. A small museum has been enacted in her name that discusses the events of her life and her writing of Frankenstein. It’s known as Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswold region of the UK is one with many small towns dispersed throughout. It’s a rural area with lots of grassland, trees, and space between buildings. The area, like much of the UK, has a lot of history tied to it. It’s a prime location to visit if you like beautiful scenery and a short rural lifestyle. Some cottages in the area are available to stay in instead of hotels, as well. The Cotswolds would be a wonderful place to stay for a longer, quieter trip.

Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, but less traveled than London. Edinburgh castle is a fun location to visit if you like learning about English history and even some American history. Edinburgh is also a prime location to get good quality wool sweaters, woven by history. The larger Scottish area is also beautiful, with stretching green plains and gorgeous, rocky mountains.

surfing in hawaii

Surfing in Hawaii isn't just a simple sport; it's a lifestyle for some people, and it's deeply rooted in the island's culture and spirit. It's something that you might have to do or learn if you ever visit the islands. There are really cool surfing spots in Hawaii, from the barrels in Oahu's north shore, or the laid back swells of Lahaina in Maui, Hawaii has waves for every level of surfer. I highly recommend going and trying out surfing at least once in your life; it'll be unforgettable.

personal account on the uk

I went to the United Kingdom for about two weeks in June of this year, and I had a lot of fun. I went with my parents, and we went to London, Bath, the Cotswold, Wales, the Lake District, Edinburgh, York, and Oxford during this time. I have family history in the UK, especially in the Cotswold and Swansea, Wales, and while we never went to any family grave sites, we did visit the very churches they did two-hundred years ago. Old churches were my favorite things to visit in general—the Gothic architecture, old stone, elaborate stained glass, and the knowledge people had been worshiping in those buildings for hundreds of years all made me adore them. Westminster Abbey was my favorite to visit overall. The food was also incredible (surprising considering the stereotypes). We ended up having a lot of Indian food while we were there, but also a lot of dishes similar to American ones, but better. I keep craving good Indian food, but nothing in the US compares. It was an exciting trip, and I wouldn’t mind going back to the UK sometime in the future.

York
York, namesake of New York, is a city along the stretch between Edinburgh and London. The main portion of the city is contained within ancient walls. A cathedral used to be present, but its materials were gradually taken down and repurposed. Walking tours of the city are also available. One shop known as the Cat Gallery is here in York with tons of cat-themed merchandise and even having a scavenger hunt through the city for various cat statues.

Oxford
Oxford University is one of the oldest universities in the world with 30 different colleges under its umbrella. It’s a gorgeous location, and much of Harry Potter was filmed there.
There’s a pub in the location called Lamb and Flag, where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien would meet up every week to talk and discuss their stories. It’s definitely worth going to, just to say that you too had a drink there.

London is certainly a worthwhile location to visit, but next time you think about going to the UK, try to give some of these other locations some love.

japan: best things to do.

Japan is one of the most culturally rich countries in the world. It's also a very beautiful place to explore both city and wild life. There's a niche for literally everyone in Japan, be it: anime, video games, fashion, cars, hiking, tech, thrifting, or even surfing. Japan is a gorgeous, and diverse place built for anybody wanting to delve deeper into what they love, or discover new fun things. I'm gonna talk about some of the niches and activities to do in japan if you're into any of these.

Cars:
If you’re into cars, Japan is like the ultimate place to be. You can check out Daikoku Parking Area, where car enthusiasts gather late at night to show off their builds, from JDM legends to modern builds. Drift through the mountain passes of Hakone or Gunma, the same spots that inspired Initial D. You can also go to car museums like the Toyota Mega Web in Tokyo, or go shopping at Up Garage for car parts you won’t find anywhere else.

Anime:
Anime fans literally have a whole world to dive into here. You can visit Akihabara, which is packed with anime shops, themed cafes, and arcades that feel like stepping into your favorite show. There’s also the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, which is basically heaven for any Ghibli fan. If you want something next-level, check out anime themed attractions like the Pokémon Cafe.

Fashion/ thrifting:
Tokyo’s Harajuku and Shibuya are the hotspots if you’re into fashion. You can find everything from high-end streetwear to the most unique thrift shops tucked into alleyways. Shimokitazawa is especially known for its thrifting culture—it’s where you’ll stumble across vintage gems and one of a kind fits. The fashion scene here is unmatched.

Video games:
Japan is one of the birthplaces of gaming culture, so there’s a lot to do. Head over to Akihabara or Shinjuku to find massive multi floor arcades where you can spend hours on rhythm games, fighting games, or crane machines. Nintendo Tokyo and Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo are must visits if you’re a fan of those franchises.

Nature:
Japan isn’t just neon lights and skyscrapers, it’s also home to some of the most beautiful natural spots. You can hike Mount Fuji or explore the trails around Nikko and Hakone. Visit Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, which feels like stepping into another world. And if you want something more chill, hit up Japan’s beaches for surfing or relax at an onsen surrounded by mountains.

food in japan:

Japanese food is nothing short of amazing, and it should be one of the main reasons as to why you would want to go there. Japanese food is roughly divided into washoku which is traditional Japanese food like sushi, or tempura. and yoshoku, which is japanese versions of western dishes like pasta or beef stew. You can go into little corner ramen shops and get a bowl that tastes amazing for under ten bucks. There are conveyor belt sushi spots everywhere, and you can grab plate after plate of fresh sushi going past you. On the other end, Japan also has some of the most high-end restaurants in the world, where some of the most skilled chefs make some of the best food you have ever tried.
