XC - SPANISH FORK INVITE
BY REKAILAH CRAM

Students got up early on Saturday morning to do something most people would be astounded at doing at 5:45 on a Saturday morning… to RUN!
The XC team at CCHS is, in my opinion, considerably the best XC team in the state of Utah. They train whether it rains or shines, and have a strong sense of team spirit. I think it’s high time that XC gets some more recognition; the existence of the team seems to be but a myth to the rest of the school. Not only are they missing out on the knowledge that Phin Mayer (senior) ran a 15:50 5k at the Spanish Fork Invite, but also on the very interesting stories that happen on and off the race course.
Abby Larson (sophomore), recounted how music encouraged her as she began the third mile of the race, “I was starting to slow down a bit, still having fun, just kinda dying,” Abby explained. The beginning of the third mile for racers is often exhausting, so when Abby came upon a group of people cheering on the sidelines, what they were doing gave her the encouragement to keep going, “They were playing ‘Life is a Highway’, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is my song!’ so then I started going faster”.
While Abby ended her race on a good note with a time of 24:38, one of her fellow sophomores ended her race with, almost literally, a kick to the face.
Lily Henstrom (sophomore) had finished her race and felt like she was “about to pass out”, and took a moment of peace to lay in the shade. She was quite unaware of the event that was about to happen next. “This boy and this girl, [older teenagers], tripped over me and fell on my nose, both of them, on top of my nose!”. Lily ended up having a really bad bloody nose, but one of her teammates quickly noticed and ran to get help from one of the coaches. She was alright, but it definitely wasn’t the end of race experience she wanted.
Personally for me, hearing any snippet of a Taylor Swift song just made everything better, OBVIOUSLY. So, the next time you think about sports, don’t forget about XC, ‘cause we’re clearly the best and most interesting sport out there, (sorry not sorry mountain bikers)! Next week, the XC team will be racing at Lakeside Park for the Timpanogos Invite on Friday, August 30th!
